Sheik Zayed Grand Mosque, Abu Dhabi

Cornflower was approached to develop a wide range of products for the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi.  Using source materials from photos of tiles, ceiling and chandelier details as well as artefacts and design drawings a total of seven ranges were developed across over 200 different products.  A range plan was developed in consultation with the customer and from there design concepts, products and packaging were produced, before a container of finished product left us in Newbury en route for Abu Dhabi.  The design element had to incorporate Arabic script, and it was a huge collaborative, and not to mention fascinating, project from start to finish.

A fragment of a 17th century CE Kirman vase carpet was the inspiration for one of the first collections to be designed.

Utilising digital fabric print technology enabled us to reproduce the beautiful design onto textile, with superb image reproduction and colour accuracy.

One of the huge main chandeliers in the Sheik Zayed Grand Mosque was the inspiration for a whole range incorporating elements of the original, but also a graphic representation for single colour screenprint.

The stunning Mirab Tiles really impress in real life, and the challenge with this range was to retain colour consistency across the wide range of products.  From a mug to a tote bag with coordinating colour handle, notebooks to a coaster and pencils - we achieved a range that comes together beautifully.

Taking a simple photo of an important bronze bowl dating from 13th century CE in the Grand Mosque's collection, we created a graphical design to work across the selected products.

A range incorporating the Islamic Dinar of Abd al-Malik was produced, using both photographic reproductions and a graphical representation for single colour screen print.  Also introduced were metal reproductions of a keyring and pin badge.
